Sjaarspieten of the Past

The longer one hangs around students, it becomes increasingly obvious how attached they are to their traditions. Intermate, and it's students are no exception to this. One of the crowd favorite traditions this time of year is the Sinterklaas drink, where an older intermate-member dresses up as Sinterklaas (real Sinterklaas was too expensive) and two Sjaars are asked to annoy everyone (their specialty) as Pieten. We affectionately dub them “Sjaarspieten”. Who the Sjaarspieten are is always a surprise until the borrel itself, adding even more entertainment for twaars, draars and vaars (is that a thing? It should be) as they place bets on which sjaars will be the Pieten this year.  

In honour of last week's Sinterklaas Drink, we thought people might appreciate a look back in time to Sjaarspieten of the last 5 years. 

2019: Tim and Morris

Though they might be known now as current and former board of intermate, Tim and Morris were once sjaars just like you and me, and were Sjaarspieten in 2019.  

2020: Job and India 

In 2020, we were all confined to virtual drinks, and Job and India were the first online-Sjaarspieten. Sadly, no photos of this were found :( 

2021: Marieke and Marlieke 

In 2021, there was yet another online drink, where Marieke and Marlieke were Sjaarspieten. Many people were in little groups at people's houses and remember very little of it (alcohol might have something to do with this). 

2022: Julia and Max

In 2022, we were finally able to do an in person Sinterklaas Drink, where Julia and Max were able to cause chaos irl.  

2023: Fasja and Marinus

And now, we come to last year. A memorable year, as at least 5 older years were able to immediately guess that Marinus (opper-kutsjaars as he is affectionately known as) would be a Sjaarspiet. We had a lot of fun breaking pepernoten in half to be able to fit them into beer bottles once everyone had figured out that we were throwing pepernoten into beer glasses. 

2024: Bram and Jasper

Honorable mention to our Sjaarspieten from this year, Bram and Jasper. They did a great job annoying everyone by throwing pepernoten in people's faces.
